About me
- College: Brookdale Community College
- Program: Nursing
- Degree: AAS
- Start: Fall 2020
- Semester: First
- Graduation: Spring 2022
My name is Aileen Scanlon, and I was born in Barranquilla, a small town in the north of Colombia. I grew up in a big family, which taught me about kindness, unity, and most importantly, to patience. This core values I carry with me and have become the foundation of who I am today. When I was thirteen years old, my Grandfather lost the function of one of his Kidneys. Fortunately, he was able to do peritoneal dialysis at home surrounded by his loved ones. My mom and I were the ones in charge to help him connect to the machine. Ever since then, I have developed an interest in the Health Sciences and the task of helping people. Even though I took a detour in my path, making the decision to start my nursing education after having a different career, and after so many years of not being in school was the best decision of my life as is never late to follow your dreams. I am currently in my first semester of nursing in Brookdale Community College, and I plan to graduate in 2022 and become a registered nurse.

My Nursing Philosophy
Nursing is a profession that is filled with challenges and tribulations. Taking care of people that are experiencing probably the worst moment of their life is a task that is not to be taken lightly. I believe that as nurses, we have a responsibility to provide the best care to our patients in a holistic way, not only looking at the ailments but also looking at the person as a whole. As nurses, we need to understand that every individual is unique and has different needs. Knowing that will help us develop a personalized approach to our plan of care. One way we can give the best care possible is by centering our career on a philosophy that is rooted in love and caring. Love is the tool that will remind me every day why I decided to change careers and make nursing my new path, as I see nursing as a way to give back in a world that needs more compassion. We can start by looking at ourselves and working on becoming better persons, so we can be an inspiration for those around us. An example of how we can achieve this is by starting to take care of our health by exercising and eating healthy. Also practicing good ethics and morals by abiding the law and showing respect for our elders. I am sure that in my future as a nurse, I will be committed to giving my patients the best of me, and I will always show love, caring, and professionalism, even in the hardest moments. As I advance in this first semester of nursing, my short-term goals have become very clear. Firstly, I would like to successfully finish this semester and continue to improve in my studies until I graduate from the ADN program. Subsequently, I would like to pass the NCLEX exam and become a registered nurse. For my long-term goal, I would like to enter a BSN program, possibly at Rutgers or NJCU, and complete my bachelor's degree. I am looking forward to all the learning experiences I will encounter in practice one day, but in the meantime, my goal is to focus on my studies and gain the knowledge that will become the base for my practice.
